Meals and Nutrition

One of the biggest questions parents ask is what kind of meals are provided for the kids.  I thought it may be easier to provide some information here.

As a member of the food program;  I  receive continuing education on the latest information regarding nutrition and children. The requirement is  six hours per year.  Nutrition training hours  from the food program is not included in the additional continuing education requirement from EEC.  I am required to feed only nutritional foods (that appeal to children) and have to meet components from the food pyramid for each meal/snack.

While Little Sunflowers is not always 100% organic, most of the items I serve the children are organic and/or all natural.  Milk and cheese are always organic.  I also feed whole grain breads, whole grain and organic crackers and the healthiest pasta I can find that the kids will eat.   The only items that are generally not always organic are fresh fruits with a hard skin that is peeled (cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew). All meats served are all natural, antibiotic free with no added hormones.  Nutrition and its effect on our bodies is an ongoing discussion the kids always have as we naturally discuss what we are eating.  Nutritional meals that are kid friendly so the kids eat them up is my goal.
